After teaching elementary school in North Carolina, I moved to NYC for art school and have since been building my career as a children's illustrator. As a result, I have really missed teaching kids, and I've been trying to get back in the classroom.

Happily, I am now teaching at Chelsea Art Museum as part of CAM Family Days. These are a series of Saturday art workshops for families. Below are highlights from the workshops so far.

For scheduling information or to reserve a spot in an upcoming CAM Family Days workshop schedule, please call the museum at 212.255.0719, ext. 112.

Pencilism - July 25, 2009.
After an interactive tour of Frederico Uribe's art and a storytime about "St. George and the Dragon," we were inspired by the artist's fantastic dog, cow-man, dragon, snake, and people art. Families transformed simple everyday materials into amazing masks and "pet snakes." After an hour, paper plates, buttons, yarn, and papertowel rolls took on new life! The masks especially were wonderfully creative.

Imaginalis - April 4, 2009.
The families and I gathered in the Project Room for New Media to analyze the shapes and colors of the art installation "Oculus" by Nick Lambert. We studied the symmetry in the art that resembles a rose window, and then we made our own stained glass windows.

ItaliaArabia - January 31, 2009.
The first art workshop for the exhibit "ItaliaArabia" was a good kickoff for CAM Family Days. We talked about the art and how the Arab artists were influenced by their travels to Italy. Then we talked about our own travel experiences and how they made our lives better. Those memories were the subject of our paintings!
